PPF vs Ceramic Coating in Dubai: Which Does Your Car Actually Need?

The short answer: PPF and ceramic coating are not competitors - they do different jobs. Paint protection film (PPF) is a thick, self-healing urethane film that physically absorbs stone chips, scratches and abrasion before they reach your paint. Ceramic coating is a thin, hard, hydrophobic layer that adds gloss, resists UV fade and makes the car far easier to wash. PPF is armour; ceramic is a shield against dirt and water. In Dubai, plenty of owners end up doing both - PPF on the high-impact front end, ceramic over the rest - because the two protect against completely different things.

    What each one actually does

    • PPF - a self-healing film applied over the paint. It takes the hit from stone chips, road debris and light scratches, and minor marks in the film heal with heat. It is the only thing that physically stops a chip reaching your clear coat.
    • Ceramic coating - a liquid polymer that bonds to the paint and cures into a hard, glossy, water-repellent layer. It makes dirt slide off, deepens the gloss, and resists UV and chemical staining, but it does not stop stone chips or scratches.

    The cost difference is large

This is usually the deciding factor. Ceramic coating is the far cheaper of the two.

    • Ceramic coating: from about AED 1,400 for a single-stage polish plus coating, up to AED 1,999 for full paint correction with ceramic. See our ceramic coating cost guide.
    • Full-body PPF: from about AED 14,000 to AED 20,000 in premium self-healing film, depending on film brand and car size. See our PPF cost guide.
    • Front-end PPF (bonnet, bumper, mirrors) + full ceramic: a popular middle path that protects the panels that actually get chipped without the full-body PPF price.

    Which should you choose?

    • New or expensive car you plan to keep - full-body PPF is the strongest protection, ideally with ceramic on top for gloss and easy cleaning.
    • Daily driver on a budget - front-end PPF for the chip zone, ceramic everywhere else. Best protection per dirham for most people.
    • You mainly want gloss and easy washing, not chip protection - ceramic coating alone is enough, and far cheaper.
    • Selling within a year - ceramic to make it show well; full-body PPF rarely pays back on a short hold.

Why both make sense in Dubai specifically

Dubai is unusually hard on paint. Stone chips fly at highway speed on Sheikh Zayed Road, fine sand abrades the clear coat, and the UV is relentless enough to fade unprotected paint within a few years. PPF answers the physical damage - chips and abrasion - while ceramic answers the chemical and cosmetic side: UV fade, staining, and the constant dust that bonds to hot paint. That is why the two are so often paired here rather than seen as either/or.

A note on doing it right

Both need to go on correctly to be worth the money. Neither PPF nor ceramic hides existing damage - they lock in whatever is already on the paint, so any correction happens first. Ceramic needs a controlled, dust-free cure, and PPF must be applied indoors because a single speck of dust trapped under the film is permanent. That is why Washii does both off-site: we collect the car, do the work indoors, and deliver it back, with free pick-up and drop-off. The mobile crew still comes to your door for washing and detailing - it is only the paint-protection work that needs a controlled space.

What is the difference between PPF and ceramic coating?

PPF is a thick, self-healing film that physically absorbs stone chips and scratches. Ceramic coating is a thin, hard, hydrophobic layer that adds gloss, resists UV and makes the car easier to clean. PPF stops physical damage; ceramic handles dirt, water and UV. They are complementary, not alternatives.

Is PPF or ceramic coating better for Dubai?

It depends what you are protecting against. For stone chips and abrasion - Dubai's highway and sand hazards - PPF is the only thing that physically stops damage. For gloss, UV resistance and easy washing, ceramic is enough and far cheaper. Many owners do front-end PPF plus full ceramic to cover both.

Can you put ceramic coating over PPF?

Yes, and many owners do. A ceramic coating on top of PPF adds gloss and makes the film easier to clean and maintain. It is a common finishing step on a full protection package.

How much do PPF and ceramic cost in Dubai?

Ceramic coating starts around AED 1,400 and runs to about AED 1,999 for full correction with coating. Full-body PPF in premium self-healing film runs from about AED 14,000 to AED 20,000. Front-end PPF plus full ceramic is a popular middle option.

Do PPF or ceramic coating hide scratches?

No. Both are applied over the paint and lock in whatever is already there, so existing swirls or scratches stay visible. Any paint correction has to be done before either goes on.
